Alumni Lead Nationwide Service

On Saturday, June 1, 2019, St. Mark’s alumni across the country reinforced the importance of giving back to their communities. The first annual National Day of Service saw dozens of Marksmen give their time and energy to local service projects.

“As one St. Mark’s community, we united for the benefit of cities nationwide,” said Reid McGlamery ’96, who chairs the Alumni Association’s Los Angeles Regional Club. “It demonstrates that community service is a practice that enlightens us and serves a higher purpose, regardless of geographic bounds."

The Alumni Board collectively wanted to focus its efforts on a single issue, and, for its first National Community Service Day, alumni served our nation’s homeless population. On any given night, more than half a million people experience homelessness across the country. Each year St. Mark’s students contribute thousands of hours to support organizations that combat homelessness in Dallas, including Austin Street Center, Goodwill, and the Salvation Army.

For the National Day of Service, more than two dozen Dallas-area alumni gathered at The Bridge Homeless Recovery Center, where they planted landscaping throughout the grounds, sorted and organized clothing donations, and created care packages for people transitioning to permanent housing.

In five other cities, the Alumni Board’s Regional Clubs worked to organize events at local shelters and non-profits, including:
  • Houston Food Bank ~ Houston
  • GLIDE Memorial United Methodist Church ~ San Francisco
  • The Covenant House Homeless Shelter ~ Los Angeles
  • East New York Farms ~ New York City
  • New York Avenue Men’s Shelter ~ Washington, D.C.

“The lessons of servant leadership taught on campus become an important part of the fabric of our graduates’ lives,” said Alex Eshelbrenner ’04, Ahlberg & Ribman Family Director of Alumni Relations. “Alumni across the country work in countless ways to move communities forward, and the Alumni Board saw an opportunity to bring a worthwhile cause to the forefront by banding together. The National Day of Service promotes our shared belief in making our communities stronger by kindly helping others.”

St. Mark’s has long maintained a commitment to its second mission of purposeful engagement with the greater Dallas area. Upper School students are required to complete at least 15 hours of community service each year, though the average student logs more than 50 hours. Collectively, the Upper School volunteered just over 22,500 hours for valuable causes around North Texas and beyond. This drive often continues after boys graduate and, today, many of our alumni are engaged with organizations and efforts to better their communities.
